Community Resources

 

 

 

1.   Tacoma Adventist Community Services provides food for people on special diets, e.g. diabetes. They are open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM and located at 3108 Portland Ave., Tacoma. Call 272-8289 to make an appointment.

2. Emergency Food Network distributes food to food banks and meal sites. Their web site lists food banks, meal sites, meal deliveries, and shelters. Call 253-584-1040. http://www.efoodnet.org/

3. Fish Food Banks providing food and emergency service referrals to people in need. Call 253-383-3164. www.fishfoodbanks.org

4. Healthcare for the Homeless:  Part of the Metropolitan Development Council, HCH partners with Sea Mar Community Health Center and Greater Lakes Mental Health Center.  Primary health care clinics occur two times weekly at sites accessible to the homeless, including nursing, dental, physician, psychiatric, and case management services. An additional clinic is provided for victims of domestic violence. Other services include: case management, hygiene, laundry and storage lockers. 5. Sea Mar Community Health Centers  Sea Mar Community Health Centers is a community-based organization committed to providing quality, comprehensive health and human services to diverse communities, specializing in service to Latinos throughout western Washington. http://www.seamar.org/

6. If you need medical supplies, you can contact the following groups which have some resources:

A.  Partnerships for Prescriptions Assistance (PPA) 1-888-477-2669 has been established by pharmaceutical companies to help people on limited income receive insulin and diabetes drugs. www.pparx.org

B.  Washington Prescription Drug Program (WPDP) 1-800-913-4146 is a prescription drug discount open to all state residents who do not have drug insurance coverage or the insurance (e.g. Medicare Part D) does not cover all their prescription drug needs. www.rx.wa.gov

C.  Salvation Army Tacoma 253-572-8452 and Salvation Army Puyallup 253-841-1491. On a one time basis they will provide a voucher for must need prescriptions when free clinics are not open.

E.  Lakewood Area Shelter at (253) 581-8689 will help Lakewood/Steilacoom residents with prescriptions. http://www.lasawa.org/

F.  Wal Mart, Walgreens, Safeway, Rite Aid and Fred Meyers sell their own meter and strips.  The cost for their meter and strips is about half the cost compared to major pharmaceutical companies.

   

7. If you need medical assistance, which is not life threatening and have no income, one of the

    following free clinics can provide basic medical care and some diabetes medication.

A.  Neighborhood Clinic 253-627-6353 at 1323 South Yakima in the basement of Catholic Community Services, Tacoma. Generally they are open on Monday & Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. http://neighborhoodclinictacoma.org

B.  Rotocare Free Clinic - Tacoma 253-370-3988 at Pacific Lutheran University- Facilities Management 124th St South; Tacoma, WA 98447

     Directions: Heading south on Pacific Avenue, turn right on 125th. Continue three blocks and turn right again on Yakima Avenue. Yakima will jog around and turn curve left and become 124th St. South. 124th will curve and on the SW corner of the 124th/123rd corner is the Facilities Management Building where the clinic is located. Parking is in the rear.

     Must be uninsured with one of the following chronic conditions: diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol.  Must be referred by Neighborhood or Trinity Clinic.

8. The Community Health Care Clinics offer medical, dental and foot care services on a sliding fee

    scale and accept medical coupons. You must call and make an appointment.  As a patient you can receive low cost prescriptions through their pharmacies. http://www.commhealth.org/

   11. Apple Health for Kids is a Washington State initiative aimed at streamlining

         applications for children’s healthcare coverage. 1-877-543-7669

            Cell phone users: Because Apple Health for Kids hot line is a national referral number,

           calls made from out-of-state cell phones will be routed back to the state with that area code. 

           You must call from a telephone with a Washington State area code to be directed to Washington State benefits.

      Tacoma Pierce County Health Department. This program assists people

      in advocacy and completing the paperwork to receive medical benefits.

13. The Rescue Mission: 253-383-4493 provides healthy meals, shelter,

      drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, education and job training skills

      and other programs designed to help people in challenging circumstances
